The Design Division
The Design Division was born out of the simple belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts: when complementary design-led skill sets are combined, products and concepts can come to life in ways that would allude a single operator.

Shane Talbot, Kieran Choy and Nicholas Kelly make up The Design Division, a collection of young and talented designers, each of whom are established in their own individual fields and careers, and who come together to create custom design solutions for our clients (and ourselves).

The Design Division craft bespoke, forward thinking and unique concepts, and we focus on bringing ideas to life - we specialise in industrial design, photography and custom furniture builds.

We are constantly working on new products, and often discuss concepts and ideas on our blog, so stay connected with us. We want to stay connected with you.

Our complete portfolio is viewable at thedesigndivision.com.au, and you can contact us anytime at info@thedesigndivision.com.au

…still setting up!

…still setting up!

Boneless Table: Wrapped and ready to go.

Boneless Table: 2nd coat.

Boneless Table: Oiling.

Now that the table is glued together, and we’ve sanded, and sanded, and sanded it until we had RSI, its time to oil this bad boy.

The danish oil has really brought out the contrast in the grain, as well as provided a nice gloss finish showing highlights on the bends.

Boneless Table: The floating tenon.

With walnut face veneer on all of the boneless pieces, we wanted to carry over the walnut inserts across both the table and the chair.
The chair has a walnut insert where the handle is, and the table has a walnut tenon at each of the joins.

A little detail - but it helps carry the theme.

Boneless Table:Amazingly, the boneless table AND the boneless chair are now glued.

Vessel: Clamping the halves.

Lining up the top so that it was level was harder than expected.
Nothing a car jack or two couldn’t help with though.

Boneless Table.
With the tenon grooves routed, its time to start assembling this bad boy.Trial runs first - because we’re still not really sure how we’re clamping it all together.

Boneless

We’ve had some requests about how well the veneer takes the curve.

Hopefully these photos show you! We actually had to use a different combination of glues to get the different veneer types to bond properly and neatly, but once we got that figured out, the bends were easy.

Boneless Table

Hows that for accuracy?

Boneless Table

Step 1. Mark out correctly.
Step 2. Setup jig correctly.
Step 3. Make sure the part is sufficiently clamped.
Step 4. Route with stable hands, a sharp bit, and be confident.

It sounds easy atleast.

Boneless Table,

The initial cuts, these will give us some straight lines to continue marking out from.

Boneless

That’s a packed workshop table.

Face veneered table parts being marked out, chair’s drying.

Barely any room to work. It’s a miracle we didnt knock anything off the table…
