The Design Division
The Design Division was born out of the simple belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts: when complementary design-led skill sets are combined, products and concepts can come to life in ways that would allude a single operator.

Shane Talbot, Kieran Choy and Nicholas Kelly make up The Design Division, a collection of young and talented designers, each of whom are established in their own individual fields and careers, and who come together to create custom design solutions for our clients (and ourselves).

The Design Division craft bespoke, forward thinking and unique concepts, and we focus on bringing ideas to life - we specialise in industrial design, photography and custom furniture builds.

We are constantly working on new products, and often discuss concepts and ideas on our blog, so stay connected with us. We want to stay connected with you.

Our complete portfolio is viewable at thedesigndivision.com.au, and you can contact us anytime at info@thedesigndivision.com.au

Another view, showing Kierans light in better detail. This view is still a work in progress though, its lacking some impact, and the materials aren’t right.
As for manufacturing this thing, the loop is actually made from six pieces, but all six are the same part - just patterned. Snap details allow for quick and easy assembly of the main loop and the hanging feature.
Flexible LED strips provide the lighting, and since the parts are thin-walled injection moulded plastics, you get a nice soft internal glow as well as the light exploding through the seams.
Well, the rapid prototype looked like that anyway.

Yes. This IS a tribute to a product shot that I love. Any guesses which one?
Also, keen eyes might notice that the pendant light is Kierans TreFoil, which came runner up in another competition last year. There hasnt been much posted on it on our blog actually, so i’ll dig out some info on it.

Competition time! And yes, this is the sheet metal version of the boneless chair. Unfortunately it will still be quite a few weeks until we actually get to lay our hands on these bad boys..

(One day i’ll get over comic fonts.
One day. But not this day. -Shane)

Skol Cups.

Now that prototyping has begun on the Skol cups, Shane finally tracked down somebody to do the glazing for the ceramic parts. The good news? They do a whole bunch of colours, for pretty much the same price as black and white.

So while we’re still going to get mainly black glazes and white glazes, we’re also going to get a few fun coloured ones.

Boneless Range:
Our entry image for one of the competitions we entered this weekend.

We always prefer to enter photos of products versus renderings, but rendering is still a useful way to convey the concept across - particular in scenarios such as this when the product isn’t completed (or its still only at mockup/trial stages).

It’s competition time again.

This is an entry we quickly put together for the concrete cups. Skol!

Boneless Chair:We really love how the Boneless Chair turned out, and have been putting some thought into developing it in a variety of other materials.
Above is a rendering of what it could look like if made in sheet metal, particularly if we went with Shane’s standard colourway of white and cyan.

sometimes when you have two tumblrs, you post stuff on the wrong account..
and then you leave it there for a few days as you don’t realise straight away..
This was accidentally posted onto Shanes more photography-oriented personal blog, check it out.
It’s a cast concrete bar table that we are still refining and redesigning, but with all of this Edge 2012 craziness, its going on the backburner for a while…

We got halfway through designing this before it got put on the backburner with all of our Edge 2012 production.

Adamus Lux - Official Selection for the Edge 2012.
A desk light made from a single piece of frosted acrylic and wrapped in an outer layer of brushed aluminium, the Adamus Lux combines the diffusion of light through its edges with an incorporated LED bank at the apex to create a soft perimeter of light that envelopes the form that intersect to create an area light suitable for both mood and task lighting.
The Adamus Lux comes with both brightness and colour controls, allowing the user the alternate the output of the Adamus Lux between moodier yellow tones and more task-oriented blue tones, and anywhere in between.
